Grade 1.4003 Steel – What Makes It Special?
Grade 1.4003 is a ferritic stainless steel that differs from 1.4006 in two key aspects: its lower carbon content and the addition of nickel. The material also contains chromium, which enhances its corrosion resistance and makes it an excellent choice for decorative and structural applications.
The name “ferritic” refers to the steel’s microstructure — it contains ferrite, a solid solution of carbon in iron, with small amounts of other alloying elements. This structure provides the steel with good formability and moderate corrosion resistance.
Properties of Grade 1.4003 Steel
Unlike austenitic stainless steels, grade 1.4003 does not offer extensive corrosion resistance. It lacks protection against chlorides and salts, which means it should not be used in marine environments or other aggressive conditions without proper surface treatment. However, when adequately processed or coated, 1.4003 performs reliably in many industrial and decorative applications.
Due to its characteristics, 1.4003 steel sheets are commonly used for decorative components, vehicle parts, and various subassemblies where both durability and appearance are important.
