Stainless steel is a material that easily withstands harsh weather conditions. Although one of its main advantages is durability, even stainless steel sometimes needs extra protection — most often in the form of a protective film. What is it used for, and why is it so important? Find out with Inox Polska stainless steel.
Protective Film – Why Is It So Important?
A single thin sheet can make a big difference. Protective film is an essential element during various stages of metal processing. It is most often used for:
- Protection during assembly or transportation, when there is a risk of mechanical damage or contamination from environmental factors;
- Shielding surfaces during processing, such as welding or bending;
- Maintaining high cutting-edge quality and precision;
- Protecting the material during laser cutting;
- Marking materials with graphic symbols to indicate the grinding direction, which simplifies further processing;
- Lubricating the surface during pressing operations, which improves formability and reduces the occurrence of surface defects.
Types of Protective Films for Stainless Steel
Now that you know why a good-quality protective film is so important when working with stainless steel, let’s look at the different types available:
- Bending films – designed to facilitate deformation during cold forming;
- Pressing films – used to improve lubrication during cold surface forming;
- Laser-cutting films – essential for protecting the surface during laser processing;
- Protective films – used during transportation or storage to prevent damage.
For a protective film to perform effectively, it must be applied correctly — ideally on a clean, oil-free surface.
