Marine Equipment – Facts You Might Not Know

Do you associate marine equipment only with calm lakes and a refreshing sea breeze? That’s a common misconception! Thanks to the high quality of materials used in its production, marine fittings are successfully applied in many branches of industry. Here are a few interesting facts about marine equipment worth knowing!

A Wide Range of Components

Marine equipment covers an impressively broad selection of components. It includes both items designed exclusively for use on the water—such as deck fillers or through-hull fittings—and those that have found practical applications elsewhere, like shackles, steel ropes, carabiners, and turnbuckles.

Marine Equipment and Corrosion

What about the materials used to manufacture it? Marine fittings are made from A2 stainless steel and A4 acid-resistant steel, providing excellent durability and resistance to rust. However, that doesn’t mean they are completely immune to corrosion. High-alloy austenitic steels, including acid-resistant types, can also be affected by surface degradation. Below are the main types of corrosion that may occur:

  • General corrosion – also known as uniform corrosion, this is the most common type that almost everyone has encountered when using stainless steel products. It gradually reduces the thickness and mass of the material. Its name comes from the uniform and progressive way in which the corrosion spreads over the entire surface.

  • Pitting corrosion – this type of corrosion causes small cavities, known as pits, to form on the surface of the material. In stainless and acid-resistant steels, the occurrence of such pits indicates damage to the passive oxide layer protecting the surface.

  • Intergranular corrosion – considered by many specialists to be one of the most dangerous forms of corrosion, mainly because it’s difficult to detect and assess its severity. It damages the internal structure of the material without visibly reducing its mass, making it especially treacherous.

Marine Equipment – Not Just for the Water

What’s particularly fascinating about marine equipment is its versatility. Many of these components are also used in the food industry, construction, and even in the world of art and design.

Remember, choosing high-quality marine equipment guarantees that your projects—whether at sea or on land—will always lead to success.
