Differences Between AISI 304 and AISI 201. What’s Worth Knowing?

For some, it may look like a mysterious code, but for others – it’s the well-known stainless steel grades. Today, we’ll take a closer look at the differences between them and explain where to order high-quality materials that meet the highest industry standards.

Stainless Steel Grades

Let’s start by revisiting the key characteristics of both types. AISI 201 is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese steel known for its excellent ductility. Type 304, on the other hand, is an austenitic stainless steel distinguished by very good weldability and corrosion resistance. Thanks to these properties, it’s also the most commonly used type of stainless steel across various industries.

Differences Between the Materials

So what are the main differences between these two materials? The key lies in their “composition” — more precisely, in the concentration of specific elements such as chromium and nickel. AISI 304 contains 18–20% chromium and 8–10.5% nickel, while AISI 201 has 16–18% chromium and 0.5–4.0% nickel. Another differentiating factor is manganese. In AISI 304, it is added in a concentration of about 2%, whereas in AISI 201, it ranges from 5.5–7.5%. The steels also differ slightly in carbon content, though this difference is minimal.

A major distinction between these grades can also be seen in pricing. In many regions, AISI 304 tends to be more expensive due to its higher corrosion resistance. However, in some markets, AISI 201 may be priced higher, primarily because of its limited availability.

When to Choose AISI 304 and When to Choose AISI 201?

Both materials have similar physical properties and comparable formability. What sets them apart is their corrosion resistance — which is why they are used in different applications. AISI 304 is commonly used in the chemical industry, food processing, and paper manufacturing, as well as in the production of medical equipment. AISI 201 stainless steel, on the other hand, is often used to make BAND-IT straps and in mass production applications.
