Duplex Steel – Discover the Potential of Stainless Steels

Duplex steels are becoming increasingly common in our surroundings — and for good reason. Thanks to their exceptional properties, this material has gained popularity and widespread use, even in complex and advanced structures. What makes duplex steels stand out, and where are they most effective? Find out with INOX Polska.

What are duplex steels?

The history of this material dates back to the 20th century, when the first patent was registered in France in 1936. Today, the duplex family includes over 40 grades of steel, and the development continues — making it difficult to predict how far it will evolve. Initially, duplex steel was mainly used in the production of tanks, pumps, and heat exchangers. Over time, its popularity grew, and in the 1970s and 1980s, it “flourished” in subsea pipeline and gas pipeline installations (notably in the North Sea).

Applications of duplex steel in industry

Ferritic-austenitic steels are used across various industrial sectors. This type of material is applied in:

  • Environments with a high concentration of chlorine, such as in water desalination systems;
  • Biofuel production;
  • Hydraulic systems — especially in oil and gas pipelines, where duplex steel serves as a connecting element;
  • As a substitute for austenitic steels in various structures and projects within the food and chemical industries, particularly in environments that demand higher corrosion resistance;
  • Modern architecture — duplex steels are increasingly used in the construction of large and prestigious buildings.

Corrosion resistance of duplex steel

What further distinguishes duplex steels from austenitic stainless and acid-resistant steels is their superior corrosion resistance. Thanks to a blend of high chromium, nickel, and molybdenum content, duplex steel demonstrates excellent resistance in highly acidic environments. The presence of nitrogen, chromium, and molybdenum also minimizes the risk of crevice corrosion or pitting. Moreover, the high chromium content significantly slows down corrosion at moderate temperatures, making duplex steel one of the most durable and reliable stainless materials available today.
